1. Summary of the story - Plot
Describe the conflict.
Is it an internal or external one?
What happens to initiate it?
Is there a resolution?

 

2. Characters
  • Main Characters:
    • Upon whom does the story center?
    • Is this person likable? believable?
    • Does the character have control over his/her fate?
    • Can you "see" him/her? How?
    • What specific details bring life to this character?
    • Does he grow and change throughout the story? Why & how? Quote an example
  • Supporting Characters
    • How many are there?
    • How do they add to the story?
    • Are they well-crafted?
    • Why are they included?
    • What is the relation between the characters?
    • How are they connected? friends, relatives, through chance?
    • How do they interact with one another?
    • Do they change and grow throughout the story? How & Why?
       
3. Theme
Why did the author write this book?
What is the main message of the story? (analogous to topic )
What are the specific messages? (analogous to topics and essay maps)
How did you recognize it?
What clues did the author provide?
Whose "voice" speaks to the theme?
