Student's Prayer
by St. Thomas Aquinas

Creator of all things, true source of light and wisdom,
origin of all being,
graciously let a ray of your light penetrate
the darkness of my understanding.

Take from me the double darkness
in which I have been born,
an obscurity of sin and ignorance.

Give me a keen understanding,
a retentive memory, and
the ability to grasp things correctly and fundamentally.

Grant me the talent of being exact
in my explanations and the ability to express myself
with thoroughness and charm.

Point out the beginning,
direct the progress,
and help in the completion.

I ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

TRIVIA

"John Neitz, professor of education at the University of Pittsburgh, found that before 1776 religion and morals accounted for more than 90% of the content of school readers. By 1926 this figure had declined to 6% and in more recent times had become too small to be measured. "(Frank G. Goble, "Building Ethics From the Classroom Up", The Wall Street Journal, Jan 8, 1988, page 18.)

Trivia: Where was God

Many of us have heard that question "Where was your
GOD when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon was
attacked?"  Well, I know where my GOD was the morning
of September 11, 2001, and He was very busy!

He was trying to discourage anyone from taking those
flights. Those four flights together held over 1000
passengers and yet there were only 266 on board.  He
was on 4 commercial flights giving terrified
passengers the ability to stay calm. Not one of the
family members who were called by a loved one on one
of the hijacked planes said that passengers were
screaming in the background.  On one of the flights he
was giving strength to passengers to try to overtake
the hijackers.

He was busy trying to create obstacles for employees
at the World Trade Center. After all, only around
20,000 were at the towers when the first jet hit.
Since the buildings held over 50,000 workers, this was
a Miracle in itself. Why did over 50% of the people not
show up that day?  Many of the people who were
employed at the World Trade Center told the media that
they were late for work or they had traffic delays.

He was holding up 2-110 story buildings so that 2/3 of
the workers could get out. It was a miracle that the
top of the towers didn't topple when the jets
impacted.  And when they did fall, they fell inward.
GOD didn't allow them to topple over, as many more
lives would have been lost.

And when the buildings
went down, my GOD picked up almost 6,000 of his
children and carried them home with him. Reassuring
his frightened children that the worst was over and
the best was yet to come.

He sat down and cried that 19 of his children could
have some much hate in their hearts.  That they didn't
choose him, but another god that doesn't exist, and
now they are lost forever.

He sent his children that are best trained for this
disaster and had them save the few that were still
alive, but unable to help themselves. And then sent
many others to help in anyway they were needed.

He still isn't finished though, he held the love ones
that were left behind in his arms.  He comforts them
daily.  His other children have been given the
strength to reach out to them and help them in any way
they can. And I believe he will continue to help us in
what is to come.

He will give the people in charge of this great nation
the strength and the wisdom to do the right thing.  He
would never leave us in our time of need.

So when anyone asks, "Where was your GOD on September
11", you can say "everywhere"!  And yes, although this
is without a doubt the worst thing any of us have seen,
I see God's miracles in every bit of it. I keep
praying for those who don't believe in GOD, every
chance I have. I can't imagine going through such a
difficult time and not believing in GOD. Life would be
hopeless.

The Fork & Theology

There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live.  So as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.  She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in.
Everything was in order and the pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.  "There's one more thing," she said excitedly.
"What's that?" came the pastor's reply.
"This is very important," the young woman continued.  "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.
The pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say.
"That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked.
"Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the pastor.
The young woman explained.  "My grandmother once told me this story, and from there on out, I have always done so.  I have also, always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement.
'In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, "Keep your fork."  It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming ... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie.  Something wonderful, and with substance!  So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder "What's with the fork?"  Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork the best is yet to come."  The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye.
He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death.  But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did.  She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge.  She knew that something better was coming.
At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand.  Over and over, the pastor heard the question "What's with the fork?"  And over and over he smiled.
During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died.  He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her.
The pastor told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.
He was right.
So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed.  They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.  They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us.

Show your friends how much you care.  Remember to always be there for them, even when you need them more.  For you never know when it may be their time to "Keep your fork."
Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share.  Being friends with someone is not an opportunity but a sweet responsibility.
Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND even if it means sending back to the person who sent it to you.

And keep your FORK..

Religion Joke

So, God asked Adam, "What is wrong with you?" Adam said he didn't have
anyone to talk to.

So, God said that He was going to make Adam a companion and that it
would be a woman. He said, "This person will gather food for you, cook
for you, and when you discover clothing she'll wash it for you. She will
always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will not nag you and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement.

She will never have a headache and will freely give you love and passion
whenever you need it."

Adam asked God, "What will a woman like this cost?"

God replied, "An arm and a leg."

Then Adam asked, "What can I get for a rib?"

The rest is history.

Why God allows Pain - Copy of a forwarded email

Explanation:

This is one of the best explanations of why God allows pain and suffering
that I have seen.  It's an explanation other people will understand.

A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As
the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects.

When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: "I
don't believe that God exists."

"Why do you say that?" asked the customer.

"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't
exist.  Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving a God who would allow all of these things."

The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard.  He looked dirty and unkempt.

The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "You know what? Barbers do not exist."

"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber.  "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"

"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did,
there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside."

"Ah, but barbers DO exist! ! What happens is, people do not come to me."

"Exactly!"- Affirmed the customer. "That's the point!  God, too, DOES exist!
What happens, is, people don't go to Him and do not look for Him. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."

If you think God exists, send this to other people, --- If you think God does not exist, delete it!

The Pretzel

Mr. Rogers says the pretzel was made to teach children abut the trinity & it was made in the form of arms folded in prayers across the chest.

Catholic Parents states, "Pretzels probably came into existence in the early 600s in a monastery in Italy or France. according to legend a monk baking bread for the week wound up with extra scraps of dough. Not wanting to waste any, he fashioned the scraps into the popular pretzel shape.   The twist of dough in the middle reminded him of arms folded across a person's chest in prayer. The clever monk used the treats to reward children who successfully learned their prayers. The name pretzel was probably derived from the Latin word pretiola, which means little reward." (March April 2005, page 13)

  Two Boxes

(I hope I get this back. Please keep it going. This has been going since
Dec. 1, 2000 ~ please send it on.)

God's Boxes

I have in my hands two boxes,
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box,
And all your joys in the gold."

I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,
Both my joys and sorrows I stored,
But though the gold became heavier each day,
The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why,
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.
I showed the hole to God, and mused,
"I wonder where my sorrows could be!"
He smiled a gentle smile and said,
"My child, they're all here with me."
I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,
Why the gold and the black with the hole?
"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go."

We should consider all of our friends a blessing.
Send this to a friend today just to let them know you
are thinking of them and that they are a joy in your life.

A ball is a circle, no beginning, no end.
It keeps us together like our Circle of Friends.
But the treasure inside for you to see,
Is the treasure of friendship you've granted to me.
Today I pass the friendship ball to you.
Pass it on to someone who is a friend to you...

 Subject: Fwd: 57 Cents
A little girl stood near a small church from which she had been
turned  away because it was "too crowded."

"I can't go to Sunday School," she sobbed to the pastor as he walked by.

Seeing her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason
and taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for her in the
Sunday  school  class. The child was so happy that they found room for her, and she
went to bed  that night thinking of the children who have no place to worship
 Jesus
Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor tenement
buildings. Her parents called for the kindhearted pastor who had befriended
their daughter   to handle the final arrangements.

As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled red
purse was found which seemed to have been rummaged from some trash dump.

Inside was found 57 cents and a note, scribbled in childish
handwriting, which read: "This is to help build the little church bigger so more
children can  go  to Sunday School."

For two years she had saved for this offering of love
When the pastor tearfully read that note, he knew instantly what he
 would  do.
Carrying this note and the cracked, red pocketbook to the pulpit, he
told the   story of her unselfish love and devotion

He challenged his deacons to get busy and raise enough money for the
larger building.

But the story does not end there...

A newspaper learned of the story and published It. It was read by a
wealthy realtor who offered them a parcel of land worth many thousands.

When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered to sell
it to  the  little church for 57 cents.

Church members made large donations Checks came from far and wide.
Within five years the little girl's gift had increased to
$250,000.00--a  huge sum for that time (near the turn of the century). Her unselfish love
 had  paid large dividends.

When you are in the city of Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist
Church, with a seating capacity of 3,300. And be sure to visit Temple University,
where thousands of students are educated.

Have a look, too, at the Good Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday
School building which houses hundreds of beautiful children, built so that no child
in the  area  will ever need to be left outside during Sunday school time.

In one of the rooms of this building may be seen the picture of the
sweet  face  of the little girl whose 57 cents, so sacrificially saved, made such
remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind pastor, Dr. Russell H.
Conwell, author of the book, "Acres of Diamonds".

This is a true story, which goes to show WHAT GOD CAN DO WITH 57 CENTS.

Please send this back. (You'll see why.)

Forwarded email received 1/21/06 re philosophy professor and God's existence

This one should keep us all thinking.
I chose #2, now you pick one.
This is a true story of something that happened just a few years ago at USC.
There was a professor of philosophy there who was a deeply committed atheist.
His primary goal for one required class was to spend the entire semester to prove that God couldn't exist.
His students were always afraid to argue with him because of his impeccable logic.
Sure, some had argued in class at times, but no one had ever really gone against him because of his reputation.
At the end of every semester on the last day, he would say to his class of 300 students,
"If there is anyone here who still believes in Jesus, stand up!"
In twenty years, no one had ever stood up. They knew what he was going to do next. He would say,    "Because anyone who believes in God is a fool."
"If God existed, he could stop this piece of chalk from hitting the ground and breaking.  Such a simple task to prove that He is God, and yet He can't do it."
And every year, he would drop the chalk onto the tile floor of the classroom and it would shatter into a hundred pieces.
All of the students would do nothing but stop and stare.
Most of the students thought that God couldn't exist. Certainly, a number of Christians had slipped through,  but for 20 years, they had been too afraid to stand up.
Well, a few years ago there was a freshman who happened to enroll.
He was a Christian, and had heard the stories about his professor.
He was required to take the class for his major, and he was afraid.  But for three months that semester, he prayed every morning that he would have the courage to stand up no matter what the professor said, or what the class thought.
Nothing they said could ever shatter his faith...he hoped.
Finally, the day came! The professor said, "If there is anyone here who still believes in God, stand up!"          The professor and the class of 300 people looked at him, shocked, as he stood up at the back of the classroom.
The professor shouted, "You FOOL!!!
If God existed, he would keep this piece of chalk from breaking when it hit the ground!"
He proceeded to drop the chalk, but as he did, it slipped out of his fingers, off his shirt cuff, onto the pleat  of his pants, down his leg, and off his shoe. As it hit the ground, it simply rolled away unbroken.  The professor's jaw dropped as he stared at the chalk. He looked up at the young man, and then ran out of the lecture hall.
The young man who had stood, proceeded to walk to the front of the room and shared his faith in Jesus for the next half hour.  300 students stayed and listened as he told of God's love for them and of His power through Jesus.
You have 2 choices:
1. Delete this and never look at it again.
2. Pass this along to your Christian and non-Christian friends, giving them encouragement we all need  every day.
When you choose option 2, you have chosen to STAND UP.
In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different:
This is not intended to be a joke, it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking..............
Isn't it funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.
Isn't it funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.
Isn't it funny how everyone wants to go to heaven provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do anything the Bible says. Or is it scary?
Isn't it funny how someone can say "I believe in God" but still follow Satan
(who, by the way, also "believes" in God ).
Isn't it funny how you can send a thousand jokes through e-mail and they spread like wildfire,
but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
Isn't it funny how I can be more worried about what
other people think of me than what God thinks of me.
Will YOU pass this on? .. I did

Mary as our physical mother:

"When Mary carried the Savior in her womb, she may be said also to have carried
all those whose lives the Savior's life contained itself. Therefore, all of us who are
united to Christ and who in the Apostle's words, "are members of this body" (Eph. 5:30),
have come forth from Mary's womb like a body united to its head. Consequently, in a
'spiritual and mystical way we are the Children of Mary and she is Mother of us all,
a Mother in the Spirit indeed, yes truly the Mother of Christ's members which we are.... '

If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. I think he would prefer an honest and righteous atheist to a TV preacher whose every word is God, God, God, and whose every deed is foul, foul, foul. -Isaac Asimov, scientist and writer (1920-1992)
