Walkup's Way Home Amy Rozek:
The DOs and DON'Ts of transferring

.

Amy Rozek provided our FYE class with tips on transferring.  Below are highlights of her presentation:

Participating Universities:

Amy explained the guaranteed transfer options that Three Rivers enjoys with Eastern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut, Sacred Heart University, University of Bridgeport, and the University of New Haven.

Requirements for the Guaranteed Transfer Programs:

Requirements vary according to the institution to which one is transferring.  Eastern, for example requires a 2.0 GPA, while UConn requires a 3.0.

While all universities require an A.S. degree, UConn specifies an A.S. in Liberal Arts and Sciences, while Eastern requires an A.S. in any program of study.

An A.S. in Liberal arts and Sciences  is stringent, leaving students with 3 open electives.
Gemeral studies, however, leaves one with 8 or 9 open electives.

Importance of SATs and High School Transcript and High School Activities

--Significant and often necessary when transferring after having taken only a few credits

--Insignificant & often not necessary when students transfer  after earning an A.S. Degree. The transfer institution will look at your college activities, become engaged and actively participate if possible.

A good question to ask when transferring:

How many MORE credits will I need to take from your institution in order to graduate?

Assignment:

My FYE students must complete the following two forms:

  1. Plan of Study Form (to be signed by advisor)
  2. Transfer Track Projected Course Sequencing Form

These should be placed in your portfolio.

Quiz Questions:

What is the "Guaranteed Transfer Programs" and what are its advantages?

What is the basic difference between Liberal Arts and Sciences and the General Studies Programs?

Why is the question " How many MORE credits will I need to take from your institution in order to graduate? " a good question?

Approximately how many credits does one need to graduate from Three Rivers with an Associate Degree?

Approximately how many credits does one need to earn a Bachelor's degree?

Is there a deadline/date by which one must apply for the Guaranteed Transfer Program?
