Walkup's Way Home Overcoming Fear -  Oral Presentation

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop and look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you can not do. Eleanor Roosevelt

7 Steps to Overcome Fear

1.  Face Your Fear: Admit to it. Deal with it and transform it into an opportunity which propels you.

2.  Motivate YourselfReward yourself  for each small accomplishment.  Buy yourself gourmet coffee or tea or a special drink..

3.  Practice Speaking: Use any opportunity to speak.  Raise you hand and ask a question in each class. Practice your own speech over and over again. Practice makes perfect.  Continual preparation is the key to success in many professions.

4. Know Your Material:  Knowledge is a very important  for building self-confidence & overcoming fear. How can one be self-confident when he doesn't know his material or speech?
Practicing a presentation over & over again improves it & increases your self-confidence.

Question:  How can one sell a $29.95 shirt when there is a $20.95 shirt next  to it - without the KNOWLEDGE of why one is superior to the other.

5.  Affirmations:  Constantly say positive messages, like "I love giving oral reports because I'm so great at it."

6.  Visualize Success:   Repeatedly picture yourself delivering an outstanding speech. By the time you actually deliver it, the presentation will be easy because you've already "done" it and "seen" it many times.  Visualizing success precedes actual success.

7. Relax and Enjoy:
When you walk up to deliver your speech, repeat your affirmation.
When standing in front of the audience, pause,  take a deep breath, SMILE, visualize the audience clapping at the end of your presentation, & go for it with joy and enthusiasm!  (You've already prepared so diligently - now success awaits you!)
