Letters to Incoming FYE students by  FYE class of 2000

Dear Incoming FYE Students,

FYE means First Year Experience; however, for me it meant For Your Enjoyment. I enjoyed this class so much!

Since this was the first time back in school for me in over 20 years I found this class to be very valuable. For those of you coming right out high school and for those of you returning to school,  I am sure that you too will enjoy this class.

This is not a high stress class. On the contrary, it will help you to deal with the pressures of college. It also teaches you time management skills, study skills, reading skills and writing skills, everything you need to be successful in college.

My suggestion to all of you would be to take this class very seriously. The information that you obtain in this class will not only help you get the most out of your college experience, but it will also guide you down life's path as well.

Enjoy and good luck to all of you.

Rich

Dear Incoming FYE Student,

This course is called First Year Experience because it is designed to
help new students adjust to college life and what it has to offer.

Most students think that this class is not worthy of being taken
seriously, but let me assure you that it has many things to offer and a
lot of challenges associated with it. One of the best things that I
learned from it was understanding how to manage my time better and using
the skills that were presented to the class. There were many different
speakers over the course of the semester that showed and taught us
different venues that the school has. It was interesting to learn all of
this, as I personally wouldn’t have figured it out on my own.

One of the highlights was taking in a “extra-curricular” activity as is
outlined by the course description. It forces you to find a part of the
school that you probably would have ignored. My daughters and myself
watched a couple of women’s basketball games and thoroughly enjoyed them.
If not for needing to fulfill a certain requirement in the FYE class I
may not have ever watched the team.

A bit of advice from an older student, don’t take this class too lightly.
Lots of writing is involved and it is actually a good thing to get used
to in college. It allows you to let the creative juices flow.

Enjoy your class.

Sincerely,
Carmella

Dear New FYE Student,
The course you have selected is a wise choice. You will learn a lot of
what is expected of you if the following years as a college student. You
will learn time management, an essential part of being a Master student.
You will learn organizational skills, which are helpful at ant area of life.
You will also learn how to write, research in the library, and many other
skills necessary in becoming a successful student.
This is not a "blow off class". It is a class that can either make or
break your career as a student. Pay attention, take a lot of notes there is
more information than most can absorb. All the information will make your
transition to becoming a successful college student an easier one.
Remember this is your education, take charge of it and it will take you
where you want to be.

Respectfully,

Previous FYE Student

Dear New First Year Experience Student,
Hi, welcome to first year experience. This is a fun class, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it. The only survival tips I can give you are:

1. Keep up with the assignments because it's pretty easy to fall behind.
2. Try your best at everything.
3. Keep track of all your absences.
4. Try to keep an open mind and have fun with the assignments.
I hope you do well in this class and in all of your classes. If you try your best I'm sure you won't have any problems. Good luck and have a great semester!
Sincerely,

Bonnie B

.Dear Incoming First Year Experience Students

I found this class First Year Experience to be a lot of work but it was well worth the effort. It taught me to study more efficiently and to set realistic goals. This class has saved me many potentially unproductive hours of studying incorrectly and to succeed on tests with less studying time. I am sure you will find that the efforts required to complete this class will be worth while just as I have.

Sincerely
FYE Student

To the New students on the Block,
Mrs. Walkup does a lot of tricks and we even got treats. Hope
the same happens for you.
Don't be shy or timid about asking questions or participating in class.
If you dint ask you wont learn and Mrs. Walkup will make you learn Steven
Covey's 7 Habits so, just buy or borrow the book. It helps.
Good luck and Don't miss class.

Janet

For Incoming Students:

I would like to tell them never to give up, or if you have to or find yourself giving up, know full well that you gave it your best shot.  it will teach you better and give you more character. This is speaking of my first year experience.

My advice to an incoming student would be not to coast through this class.  There may be things in this class that will help you achieve things not thought of at the present time.  Also, be involved and not a side-line viewer, because that will not help you in any manner. The things that are taken for grated are usually the things that are missed a little later in the game.  These things can be useful to you and if they are not , then nothing was lost.  Be positive in all your work as a student and do not reject all the ideas of everyone that you may encounter.

This letter is for all incoming freshmen, which are going to be taking the First year Experience course.  As a present student in the course,  all I can tell  you is to expect the unexpected.  What I mean by expect the unexpected is, don't take this course lightly; the course is very informative, but there is homework involved, and lots of it.

Don't make the mistake that I made, which is coming in and thinking that this class will be a breeze.  There are exams that you will need to study for, and also you will have to give up some of your free time to attend school functions.  This is part of the course requirement.

In closing, I would like to say if you enter the course with the right frame of mind and are prepared to sacrifice a little of your time, you will do well in this course.
