Goals: Name Them & Claim Them
You have to name it to claim it.
Dr. Phil McGraw, Life Law # 10 |
What are goals?
"Goals are
specific changes you'd like to make in yourself or your environment. To
help make your goals happen, state them as results you can
measure." Dave Ellis
Bishop's text defines goals
as “an end toward which
an effort is directed; an aim or intention."
Why have
goals?
So that your dreams, hopes and wishes may become a reality.
What is
the difference between a dream, hope & wish and a goal?
Goals get accomplished
What does
setting goals say about you?
I am in charge
& have a plan.
I have a choice
I chart my course & am the captain of my ship
I am empowered &
free. I
am not a victim.
I am proactive. I am responsible
The Power
of Goals
Create the future
Today’s dreams become tomorrow’s opportunities & realities
Goals work
Why don't all
people have goals according to McGraw?
McGraw quotes Lily Tomlin
& Jane Wagner: "I always wanted to be somebody, but I should
have been more specific." If we don't name our goal, we won't
receive it. The most we ask for is the most we get. Similarly if you ask
$2,000 for a used car, no one will ask you if you want $12,000 instead.
We must name it to claim it. McGraw contends if a genie appeared
to us, we would stammer.
The Key to
success in achieving any goal
Commitment
If you’re fully committed to a goal, it means you are willing to do
whatever it takes to achieve it & everything you do will reflect
that commitment.
Persistence -
Chances are you know extremely talented people who haven't achieved
their goals - & less gifted people
who have achieved extraordinary success in spite of obstacles.
Further, we
must be so in tune with our goal that each time we head toward it, we
can taste it, feel it, sense it, and feel a mature joy and
pride. Conversely, if we accidentally get off-track, we
immediately sense it and make corrections.
What
happens when you set a goal?
You are saying, “This is important to me. This matters.”
Next you actively seek for ways to achieve it.
Once the goal is stated, the path reveals itself.
You take
inventory & realize what you have to do (or not do) , to
overcome, or to change in order to accomplish the goal.
Do you agree
with the following quote for the day?
One day Alice came to a fork in the road and
saw a Cheshire
cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know,' Alice answered.
'Then,' said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
