Discussions
The "Discussion page" of online classes takes the place of traditional ground discussions.

After reading Chapter 9, "Personal Wellness," a ground class would probably define stress, discuss its and discuss the stress management strategies listed on pages 268 & 269.  Students would probably be asked which stress management strategies  work best for them....

An online class, however, would have the discussion online. The following cell typifies  an online posting assignment:

Lesson 1:   Personal Wellness

Objectives:

  • To understand the importance of physical and mental health in success in school
  • To explore ways to maintain a healthy body
  • To explore ways to nurture a healthy mind

Lesson 1

Your mind and body may seem like two independent parts, but research has caused us to dismiss this idea and instead realize that the mind and body work in sync. For example walking as a means of physical exercise often helps the mind with thinking clearly. Nutrition, Stress, and Mental Health are topics worth discussing for college students.

Post your first comment on the  discussion icon. The following questions should give you a start:

What are your ideas on maintaining a healthy body and nurturing a healthy mind? For example, do you believe stress is an everyday part of life or is it something that can be avoided? How do you deal with it?

Depression is an illness that is more and more common. Are you aware of the signs of depression? Are you or anyone you know affected by it?

How do you take care of yourself with all of your responsibilities? Do you have special tips to offer others to "keep it together?"

Has going to college helped or hindered your health? Do you tend to skip meals? Eat more? Sleep less?

Post your thoughts on any of the diverse topics within the categories of nutrition, stress, and mental health.

Remember that a posting consists of at least 3 full sentences.

Instructions for posting in a discussion forum:

  • From the Home view, click on the Communications icon.
  • Click on the Discussion Icon
  • Post a comment on the March 24 Stress Discussion Item.
    • (Responding to posts is called participating in a " threaded discussion")
