Walkup's Way Home

Case Study:  Andy's Grade of 0

. Andy was absent on the day of a scheduled test.

He walks into the next class and  the professor says, "Here are your tests.  Let's go over questions 4 and 12 because a handful of you are unclear about those items."

Andy  instinctively blurts out, without even raising his hand, " I was absent  for the test.  Should I leave the room so that you don't give away the answers to me, in fairness to the other students?"

Professor Nyce  replies, "No.  The syllabus clearly states, 'Students who are absent from class should contact the professor before class to make arrangements to submit work, take tests, and make up work.'  You did not do this. Further the class syllabus indicates that today is the day designated to review the test."

Absent Andy was Angry & outraged.
In his head he quickly went over options.  Which is his best option & why?

A.  To say "OK" and be quiet.

B. To say "Thank you I didn't realize that.  I was so sick last week that I went to the doctor.  I can get you a slip that proves I was too sick."

C.  To immediately walk out of the room before the material is covered  and go  to the tutoring center to see if someone has time to administer the exam to him that day.

D. To immediately walk to the Dean's office  to plead his case and complain about the professor.

E. To say "Thank you. I hadn't realized that" and participate fully in the class discussion.

F.  To take step E (thank you & participate) plus follow it up with a visit to the prof  asking if any extra credit project could be assigned to him.

G. To drop the course as a protest against the harsh policy, hoping the administration and student body would take notice and respect him for his action.

H.  Is there another option that was not mentioned that you'd suggest any pursue?
