Walkup's Way Home    First  Year  Experience

       Book Review - Oral Presentation

My Personal Comments:

As we have said throughout the semester, accepting responsibility for your actions and your  studies demonstrates maturity.  As we approach the end of the semester, we will take this concept one step further: Some claim, as one grows in knowledge, a good person feels a responsibility to share some of that knowledge with others/society.

Keep in mind taxpayers finance a great part of your education, as your tuition only covers a limited  portion of the actual cost of your education. I'd like to suggest that we have a responsibility to society and to taxpayers to make the most of ourselves and our education.

In this spirit, I am asking you to share the knowledge you've gained from your reading this semester with your classmates.

I hope you look forward to this experience and consider it a privilege. Your role will be that of a teacher
Each week, as your instructor ,I look forward to standing before you. I consider it a privilege. You will now understand the role of instructor in a deeper way because of this experience.

While sharing your knowledge, you will have a taste of what it is like to be an educator: As an educator, I

  •  look forward to sharing material I love
  •  hope to present it clearly, so that you will understand it fully
  • hope you will love the material too (and not find it boring)
  • hope this new knowledge brings you joy and enlarges your life (Aristotle says the greatest of all pleasures are intellectual pleasures

Since students are our  future, educators see students as the lifeline to the future.  We hope you begin to grasp the gravity of your responsibility.  As you pass this information along, you will realize that teaching is a transformative process for both the educator and the student. It is a privilege and should not be taken lightly.

Look forward to and enjoy this privilege:

Computer Lab Instructions

Create  a simple PowerPoint for the class.

You may go to your "I drive" and touch up the presentation you started last week.

I'd suggest separate slides for the following:

  • Opening Page:   Title of Book & Author
  • Your name
  • Thesis (What is the book about in one or two sentences? What is the main purpose of the book?)
  • Specifics:  What specific item/lesson/example/whatever was the most meaningful or memorable to you?

If you have spare time, create additional pages.  You may want to summarize the book for the class; list your favorite parts & say why they were your favourites; record a few quotes from the book...

Most importantly,  Good Luck & Enjoy

This is really such a tremendous opportunity for you to practice & increase  your skills in a relatively stress-free manner.
