College Activities:

I continually involve myself in college-related activities.

  • In 2007 I was a member of the Convocation Committee. The five-member committee planned the annual fall convocation.  I delivered a speech and presented the student award.
  • I have been  a member of the Humanities Steering Committee  since its inception.  I vote on the approval of budget items, speakers, text adoptions, course adoptions, as well as policies and procedures.
  • Center for Teaching: as a member I sought  speakers, workshop ideas, and professional development ideas for faculty and staff, as well as vote on proposals and budget items. In 2005 I created the first web page for Center for Teaching
  • During 2003 the humanities writing chair and I oversaw a writing across the curriculum initiative.  We gathered samples of student writings from various classes, using these as models for what should be expected in various writing levels.  We created wiring competencies and grids for for humanities courses.
  • During 2002  I've  updated the entire college faculty handbook. I also  formatted it  for online publication.  I've participated in panel discussions, worked on retention initiatives, and contributed to countless workshops at Three Rivers.
  • I've read numerous portfolios evaluating Assessment of Prior Learning portfolios for college credit
  • Over the years I have been a reader for the humanities writing awards. I had also initiated the idea of such an award at a steering committee meeting.
    • I encourage my students to submit work to competitions. My students have been recipients of various college writing awards: poetry, essays, research papers...   In 2006 one of my students, Lindsey Beck, was  selected for publication in Houghton Mifflin's text On Course.
  • Over the years I have  worked on CCET (Connecticut Council of English Teachers) projects to evaluate student writing and composition pedagogy.
  • I continually seek publicity from the college and outside sources for my students' successes. I have had students featured on everything from college bulletin boards, college newspaper publications, the local newspaper, the Associated Press and in December 2007, Feldman's Power Learning text will highlight one of my students' success story.

Technology in the Classroom:
The role of technology in education is of paramount importance to me. With this in mind I became the first humanities instructor  at Three Rivers to have my syllabus on the Web, to have my own domain on the Web,   to integrate computers in my writing classroom, and to provide Web education for my   writing  and first year experience (FYE) students. I co-authored a Visions in Technology paper with John Whitman for the Humanities Division.

In 1996  when the merits of technology in the classroom were  simplistically debated as a black and white issue (is it good or bad), rather than being seen as part of classroom instruction tools (like a blackboard ), the Two Year College's Association Northeast Regional conference in New York sponsored a conference, the theme being, "Technology in the Classroom; Real Learning or Virtual Education."  I was a presenter at this conference, demonstrating effective methods of incorporating technology in the classroom to improve critical thinking skills, research skills, and writing skills.

Composition:

I have worked on a one-year writing project. Beginning fall 2003, random student essays from various disciplines were evaluated against a set criteria which I and the writing chair established. The purpose is to determine how well the the college is meeting its writing learning outcomes, as described in our college handbook. I instructed faculty readers as to grading and norms.

I am also very interested in  composition skills.  Therefore, as I member of the Connecticut Coalition of English teachers, I volunteered to participate in the state-wide  Composition Research Collaborative Project.   As a researcher, I recorded my activities regarding  preparation for composition classes... and compared these with instructors state-wide.  We created a document called "Composition Commonalities: Agreed Upon Outcomes for 101." I was awarded  a Certificate of Achievement from the Composition Research Collaborative for my work on this project.

My students have fared well in writing classes being  recipients of the college's essays writing award and poetry award.

Current Interests:

I love the Web and have created a sophisticated site for my students.  I have also contributed to the http://www.oncourseworkshop.com Website, a repository of teaching tips for the international community.

During  the 2003/2004 school year I worked with the writing chair on a college-wide writing evaluation project.  We created grading rubrics, selected student writing samples, and trained faculty readers so that they could  evaluate student writing.

I review texts in my discipline for publishers.
