Math Trivia - Calculate

The Romans had no adding machines.  Even the art of writing was known to comparatively few persons.  so they did their adding and subtracting with the aid of little stones used as counters.  The Latin word for the little stone used in this way was "calculus," diminutive of "calx," meaning "limestone."  From calculus the verb "calculare"  , meaning "to calculate" was formed and its part participle, "calculatus", is the immediate origin of English "calculate."  From Picturesque Word Origins..

 You're driving a bus that is leaving from Pennsylvania and ending in New
York. To start off with, there were 32 passengers on the bus. At the
next bus stop, 11 people get off and 9 people get on. At the next bus stop, 2
people got off and 2 people got on. At the next bus stop, 12 people got
on and 16 people got off. At the next bus stop, 5 people got on and 3
people got off.

 What color are the bus driver's eyes? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

 The key to understanding the problem is focusing on the right  If we assume it is critical to keep track of the number of people getting   on
 and off the bus, we focus on information that turns out to be
unessential.  It distracts us from the important information. The answer to the
problem  is   found in the first sentence. You're driving the bus so the color is of
 course the color of your eyes.

 If you didn't get it right, don't worry.
 The majority of people don't answer correctly. If you got it right, you have
 exceptional problem solving skills.

FAST FACTS:

Try this with your friends:
Take any three-figure number in which the first digit is the
larger than the last...like 846. Now reverse it...648, and
subtract the smaller from the larger making it 198. Now add
that number to the same number reversed, 891. The answer is
1,089, and I didn't even have to use a calculator.

The answer will always be 1,089 even if the result of the
subtraction is two figures, you just add a zero to the front
before reversing. I can't be certain, but I would venture to
say that the guy who figured this out, spent a lot of his
